If you’re in advertising then you are probably familiar with two concepts that are the driving force behind this video: 1) user-generated content; and, 2) you’re not in control of your brand anymore… consumers are.
DJ Steve Porter has re-cut and re-mixed a popular DRTV spot for Slap Chop and turned it into his own work of art for a contest. It’s another example of consumers sometimes producing a better product than the advertiser… and it also supplies a valuable lesson that every marketer should take note of. Once your content is published, it’s “game on”.

Using celebrity talent in DRTV and television commercial production always comes with a unique set of circumstances. And when your celebrities are professional athletes, you can multiply your challenges by 2! Fortunately, once again, proper planning will save the day. NFL professionals Ronnie Brown and Vontae Davis star in this new hot spot for Title Sports Drink. Their limited availability was overcome by using body doubles, special cameras and a great location yielding all scenes without major “company moves”. Check it out:

What’s hot in DRTV right now? The rapidly-growing Hispanic audiences that are blowing the roof off of response rates. Every major DRTV and television commercial production should be planning for Spanish versions. If you script it from the start, you can take advantage of the economies of scale in both the shooting and editing. Watch both the English and Spanish versions of Fertility Scope and you’ll see what we mean:

Anyone that has shot food for DRTV or television commercials knows how tedious and exacting the production can be. This DRTV spot for Polar Delight was no exception. Shot over 2 days in the SPP studio in Miami, the shoot required extensive pre-production planning to get the perfect beauty shots and extreme close-ups. Day 1 was for product and Day 2 was used for demo shots and testimonials. The complete production, including edit went without a hitch and everyone involved was delighted with the final outcome.

This :30 DRTV spot for Breathe Again is a great example of utilizing a mix of stock footage and new still shots of the product. The stills were then animated in the edit to provide interest and movement. Layer in dynamic graphics, music and a compelling announcer track and you have a DRTV spot ready to sell product that was produced on shoestring budget!

Take a look at another example of how we created and produced a :30 television commercial completely out of stock footage. This spot is for Independence Bank (now part of Sovereign Bank). Community banks and credit unions are big users of stock footage as they rarely have the budget for shooting new content. Many retailers have the same requirements. And, of course, so do a lot of DRTV users.
